Athletes from our Winter & Summer Season are selected to represent Victoria at National competitions. For more information on National pathways, please contact info@vewsa.org.au

Currently there are three different National competitions:

  • National Electric Wheelchair Sports (N.E.W.S) in April each year.
  • Powerchair Football National Championships in October each year.
  • Powerchair Football Club Championship in January each year.

National Electric Wheelchair Sports (N.E.W.S.)

N.E.W.S. is specifically for people who use electric wheelchairs for their everyday mobility and have a neuromuscular disorder. This is the only competition available for people with neuromuscular disorders to compete on an equal playing field.

N.E.W.S, was the brainchild of Roger Melnyk, who had a type of Muscular Dystrophy and was the Executive Officer of the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Victoria. He took his idea to the Muscular Dystrophy Associations of Australia and the sports were developed to give athletes an opportunity to compete for their state.

N.E.W.S is the showcase for electric wheelchair sports in Australia. It is an unique annual event which displays the all round skills of each athlete in the three sports of Balloon Soccer, Powerchair Hockey and Rugby (Touch Football). Today, we have competing teams from, New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia. The games are played in a highly competitive atmosphere.

The standard of play at N.E.W.S has improved every year since the first games in 1986.
